VSU DISCOURAGES EARLY MARRIAGES

The Victim Support Unit (VSU) of the Zambia Police Service says it is concerned with the rising cases of early marriages in the country.
The VSU has since embarked on a vigorous national- wide programme to sensitise the public on the dangers of early marriages.
A team of police officers from VSU in Lusaka is conducting the sensitization campaigns.
VSU National Coordinator, Tresphord Kasale confirmed the development in an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Nakonde today.
Superintendent Kasale said that his team was in the district to sensitize its officers and other stakeholders on issues related to early marriages in the area.
He said that the department of Home Affairs was concerned with the rising cases of early marriages in the country, especially in rural areas.
Superintendent Kasale added that it was for that reason that the ministry came up with such a program to start sensitizing communities on the matter.
Meanwhile, Superintendent Kasale has appealed to all Village Headmen in the area to be sensitizing their subjects on the issue and also report anyone found wanting to relevant authorities in order to curb the scourge.
Mr Kasale said his team had been conducting similar programmes in all the districts in Muchinga Province adding that Nakonde was the last district in the sensitization campaign.
He said that his team was impressed with the response from people on the matter in the entire Muchinga Province.
