POLICE ARREST WOMAN FOR STEALING A CHILD

Police have arrested a woman by the name of Agatha Kalaluka in Western province for stealing a two year old girl.

Police Spokes Person Elizabeth Kangela confirmed the incidence to ZANIS in Lusaka today.

She said the incidence happened on 28 February 2012 around 18:00 in Imbowa Compound in Mongu.

Ms Kangela said that suspect of Windberk Mongu was handed over o the police on 29^th February 2012 by her Husband and the landlord.

She said Circumstances surrounding the matter are that the mother to the victim sells illicit beer from her home where the suspect went to drink from.

While there Agatha saw the child playing with other children and took the baby to her husband as the Child she had given birth to.

It is believed that some time back in July last year while in Lukulu at her sister’s house Agatha told her husband that she was pregnant.

Agatha later came back to her husband’s house without the baby and informed her husband that she had left her at her sister’s house as she was unwell.

Ms Kangela said that on 26 February 2012 Agatha told her husband that she was going to Lukulu to get their child and later returned on the 28^th February at night with a 2 year old child.

Her husband with the land lord later took the child to the police and the woman has since been arrested and charged with stealing of the child contrary to section of 171 of the penal code of the laws of Zambia and will appear in court soon.

Meanwhile an unknown Cyclist in Southern province died on the spot after sustaining fatal injuries when a motor vehicle canter type Registration number AJC 477 hit him.

The driver who has been identified as Philip Hanbuvinbu failed to negotiate a cave due to over speeding.

The Canter in the process hit into the cyclists who was on the left side of the road.

The incidence happened at around 09:00 hours on 29 February along Sibanyate road.

Mr. Hanbuvinbu aged 56 of Kalomo is being detained at Choma Police and will be charged with causing death by dangerous driving contrary to section 161 of the road traffic act number 11 of 2002 and he will appear in court soon.

And in Central province an unknown Cyclist died on the spot after sustaining fatal injuries while two others sustained serious injuries.

The incidence happened on 29^th February 2012 around 11:00 near Kabwe General Hospital when a motor vehicle Registration number ABM 5367 which was driven by Mbabu Benson aged 35 of New Mutima Kabwe lost control.

A passenger Lewis Chiseso 34 of house number G122 Bwacha Compound sustained a pain full head, cuts on the lips and painful legs two pedestrians off the road where hit by the motor vehicle and sustained serious injuries.

The body of the deceased is lying in Kabwe General Hospital awaiting post-mortem and the driver has been detained and charged with causing death by dangerous driving contrary to section 161 of the road traffic act number 11 of 2002 and he will appear in court soon.

FISH BAN LIFTED

The Fish ban period which was being observed throughout Luapula Province since first December last year has been lifted.

The fish ban is mainly observed in the three water bodies of the Province namely Luapula river, lakes Mweru and Bangweulu which are the main breeding areas for the fish.

A check by ZAINS in all the three main markets in Mansa, Chilyapa, Senama and UBZ Market this morning found scores of Mansa residents buying fresh fish.

Most people talked to said that they were happy that the fish ban period was over.

They however attributed the high price of fish due to the erratic supply of fuel that the district is currently experiencing.

Government every year from 1st December to 1st of March imposes a fish ban to allow for the fish to breed.

Several fishermen and fish traders were reported to have been arrested in various parts of the province for defying this year’s fish ban.

Officials at the Department of Fisheries in Mansa disclosed that a total of 13 people in Mansa district  have so far been fined and convicted for being involved in illegal fishing activities during the ban.

According the Fisheries ACT of 2011 of the laws of Zambia it is an offence to carryout fishing activities or to be in possession of fish during the fish ban, and if convicted the offender is liable to a fine or imprisonment.

SOUTHERN CHIEFS AGAINST REALIGNMENT - HAMUDULU

Siavonga Area member of parliament  Kennedy Hamudulu says President Michael Sata and the stakeholders to resolve the controversial realignment of Chirundu and Itezhi-tezhi districts, respectively.

 And the Chirundu Catholic Church Youths has condemned the Police in the area for not issuing them a permit to have a forum where they intended to discuss on the advantages of the realignment of Chirundu by President Michael Sata.

 Mr. Hamudulu said that the stakeholders had a meeting in Choma recently where they discussed the issue amicably.

He said it was now up to the president and them to decide.

He said that the Chiefs were against the realignment of Chirundu by the president because they were not consulted on the matter.

Mr. Hamudulu spoke this in a telephone interview with ZANIS.

The MP added that the tradition leaders have demanded the president to rescind his decision as it would bring peace to the people of southern province.

 “we have heard elsewhere where people have voiced out sentiments against some presidential  orders and they have reversed but why not here ?, ” he complained.

 He said he was saddened  to hear the president that he could liken his rule to the colonial masters.

 “ He was saying  that when the colonial masters did this... no one protested , but by then there was no democracy unless if he say his ruling  is under the colonial masters,” he said.

 The MP observed that the majority of people who were supporting the realignment of Chirundu were PF cadres who just came in the district recently and not the indigenous people of Chirundu.

 “ Let the  indigenous people of Chirundu  talk about this realignment and not those who have just come two days because they have nothing to contribute,“ he said.

 Meanwhile the Chirundu Catholic Church Youths has condemned the Police in the area for not issuing them a permit to have a forum where they intended to discuss on the advantages of the realignment of Chirundu by President Michael Sata.

 Chirundu Catholic Church Youth chairperson Tadeo Chinoi complained that the move by the police was not good as it did not allow the youths to express their views over the realignment of Chirundu

 Mr. Chinoi said that the youths had invited some senior MMD officials to take part in the discussion  over the realignment of Chirundu district and the officials were just waiting for the confirmation  from the police.

GOVT.COMMITTED TO SPORTS DEVELOPMENT IN SCHOOLS - MUMBA

Lundazi District Commissioner (DC) Janet Mumba says government attaches great importance to the development of various sports programmes in schools

 Ms. Mumba said it is through sports that talented pupils in various sporting skills excel to earn their livelihood and develop their talent a spirit of cooperation and hard work virtues in order for Zambia to develop.

ZANIS sports reports the District Commissioner saying this in Lundazi over the weekend.

This was when she officiated at the 2012 inter school indoor games competition held at Lundazi secondary school.

Ms. Mumba urged school pupils to offer their commitment to sporting disciplines if they were be role model  in their schools in the district.

“Furthermore, I urge all pupils to concentrate on their academic work as they focus on sporting activities in order to brighten their future and the future of the country, “ she said.

Ms. Mumba observed that sports help exchange different views, learn from each other and share memorable moments, hence the need to those who win to continue working hard and those that would not do well not to give up.

The DC has however, cautioned teachers and participants of the dangers of HIV/AIDS adding that abstinence was the best weapon against the disease.

Speaking on behalf of the District Education Board Secretary “DEBS” Herbet Mwiinga, Lundazi District Education Standard Officer DESO, Chiza Mtonga called on pupils to consider sports as their career.

Mr. Mtonga said sports minded pupils should dedicate and commit themselves to sports to effectively compete in basketball, volleyball, table tennis and badminton , among other sports disciplines.

He revealed that sport is not only a source of income where one can earn a living through it, but also to help improve the immune system and keep the mind refreshed.

He disclosed that his office is doing everything possible to support and sustain sport in the district which he said is in line with government policy of broadening career options for all pupils.

The District Education Board Secretary has since appealed to the participants to maintain high levels of discipline and guard against abusing the hospitality of the host school by vandalizing infrastructure and  furniture among other things.
