The Zambia Union of Journalists (ZUJ)
has welcomed the appointment of the new top management leaders at Times of
Zambia and Zambia Daily Mail.
The Union saluted Broadcasting and
Tourism Minister Given Lubinda for coming up with a distinguished team of
veteran journalists to lead the two public media institutions.
Mr Lubinda announced yesterday the
appointment of Godfrey Malama as Managing Director and Deputy Editor- in -Chief
Nicky Shabolyo for Times of Zambia while Isaac Chipampe as Zambia Daily-Mail
Managing Director and deputised by Anthony Mukwita.
In a press statement made available to
Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Lusaka today, ZUJ
President Anthony Mulowa said the Union had no doubt that the new management
teams have vast experience in the media industry and would stand to the
challenge of providing the much needed leadership skills to improve operations
at the Times of Zambia and Zambia Daily Mail.
Mr Mulowa said it would work with the
new management in a combined effort to better the working environment at the
two institutions to ensure high professionalism.
ZUJ has since appealed to the newly
appointed Managing Directors and their deputies to ensure they addressed the
challenges that the two public media were faced with.
Mr Mulowa said there was need to
improve the condition of services for unionised workers at the two institution
as a way of motivating the employees.
He explained that the current
anomalous difference in wages between those in management and the union has had
a serious negative effect on the output of the two companies.
Meanwhile, Unionised workers at the
Times of Zambia have welcomed the appointment of veteran journalist Godfrey
Malama as Managing Director and Nicky Shabolyo as Deputy Editor- in
-Chief.
The Zambia Union of Journalists (ZUJ)
Lusaka Times chapel leadership said the appointment of the duo was a decision
in the right direction adding that the performance of Mr Malama was very impressive
when he previously served at Times of Zambia.
In a statement made available to
Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) today, Chapel President Delphine
Zulu said workers were happy with the appointment of the duo.
Mrs Zulu noted that the newly
appointed Managing Director and his deputy editor are both veteran
journalists who have worked in the public media before and were vested
with the challenges the media workers faced.
She cited inadequate transport for
field workers as one of the many challenges the Times of Zambia was faced with.
Mr Zulu said the Union was confident
that Mr Malama and Mr Shabolyo would address the challenges faced by the
institution.
