FUGITIVE ACCIDENT DRIVER ARRESTED IN NCHELENGE

Police have formerly arrested and charged the driver of the mini bus which on Thursday last week was involved in the fatal road traffic accident in which thirteen people died at Kanyembo area in Nchelenge District of Luapula Province.
Confirming the arrest to ZANIS in an interview this morning, the Deputy Commissioner of police for Luapula Province Aaron Mushanga said the fugitive driver has been arrested and charged with 13 counts of causing death by dangerous driving.
Mr Mushanga identified the culprit as James Chisumo, 40 years of age, of Musumali Village in Chief Kalasa Lukangaba’s area in Mansa District in Luapula Province.
He said the police officers caught up with the fugitive driver at Kawambwa District Hospital where he was admitted for treatment after running away from the accident scene and added that he was scheduled to appear in court for plea yesterday.
However, the Deputy Police Chief said the case could not take off because Nchelenge District Resident Magistrate Seliya Kanunka was not feeling well adding that the culprit has since been remanded in custody at Nchelenge state prison.
Ten people died on the spot while two died at Nchelenge’s Saint Pauls Mission Hospital and one died at Neighboring Mbereshi Mission Hospital in Kawambwa District where they were rushed for emergency treatment.
The accident happened after a Mansa bound mini bus collided head-on with an oncoming truck laden with 600 pockets of cement. This happened when the minibus driver attempted to overtake another mini bus which was headed in the same direction.
Luapula Province Minister Rodgers Mwewa who took time to visit the funeral houses in Nchelenge last week directed police officers in the area to bring the culprit to book and withdraw his driving license.
