CHIKANI URGES ZAMBIANS TO REMEMBER MAMA BETTY KAUNDA

South African High Commission to Zambia Moses Chikane has implored Zambians to use the country’s 48th independence anniversary to celebrate the life and legacy of Mama Betty Kaunda, who died last month.
LATE MAMA BETTY KAUNDA
And Mr. Chikane says time has come for the African continent to use its political independence as a springboard for economic emancipation.
Mr. Chikane said although the independence struggle is synonymous with the role Dr. Kenneth Kaunda and other freedom fighters played, Mama Betty Kaunda also represents a rare class of heroines of the struggle.
The South African envoy told the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in an interview today that South Africans and the continent will always remember the role Zambia played in liberating the region.
Mr. Chikane has extended his congratulations to Zambians for consolidating democracy as evident by last year’s smooth transfer of power from the MMD to the Patriotic Front-PF .
He urged Zambians to continue working together in ensuring that the country achieves all its developmental targets and other national goals.
And Mr. Chikane has also implored the African continent to harness its abundant natural resource in fighting poverty, disease, hunger and other social ills.
Mr. Chikane called for developmental strategies that see the total transformation of the continent from being under-developed into a prosperous one.
He noted that the continent has arable land and water bodies that can support agriculture and feed the whole continent.
