Mopani Copper Mines plc has today (August 17) announced plans to invest an additional $2 million to extend the life of the Nkana Open Pit Mine by two years to 2017.
Mopani Copper Mines chief executive officer Emmanuel Mutati said: “We are pleased to confirm that the Area J Open Pit Mine at Nkana will continue producing ore for a further two years following our additional $2 million investment, increasing the life of mine to 2017. We are committed to delivering value to Zambia from its copper resources. This investment will help maximise that value as well as providing continued employment.”
Mutati said the extension would result in additional copper production of approximately 30,000 tons and secure 120 jobs.
He explained that the work to extend mine life would involve relocating a rail line and a road which will allow the pit depth to be increased to 125m and the width to 310m with the length remaining at 520m.
