MBINGU WA MUTHARIKA TO GRACE AGRICULTURE SHOW


Lusaka - Malawian President Mbingu Wa Mutharika is expected to grace this year’s 84th Agricultural and Commercial Show which would run from Thursday July 29 to August 2, 2010 and officially opens to the public on Saturday July 31st.
Agricultural and Commercial Society of Zambia President Elizabeth Nkumbula disclosed this saying the Malawian President was expected to grace the show under the theme ‘’Sustainable Development’’.
Speaking during a media briefing in Lusaka today, Dr Nkumbula also disclosed that the budget for this year’s show expenditure stands at K3 billion and it was projecting a turnover of about K4.5 billion.
She also stated that entry charges for this year’s show would remain the same as last year at K15, 000 per persons over five years old for a day.
Dr Nkumbula also said show membership for the five days had been pegged at K70, 000 per adult and K40, 000 for junior show members between the ages of 6-17 years old.
 She further said exhibitors’ badges would cost K65, 000, while society member badges had been pegged at K65, 000. She further said junior society member badges would cost K35, 000 adding that the ARM badge would be sold at K5, 000 per day for those going out and coming back to the show grounds.
 Meanwhile, Dr Nkumbula has stated that security during the show would be provided by the Zambia Police in conjunction with private security companies that have been hired by the society as well its own security personnel.
 “The Zambia Police Service has guaranteed a very strong presence at the gates to assure the public that mugging is effectively controlled”, she stated.
 The Society president further said that the traffic section of the Zambia Police in-conjunction with the Road Traffic and Safety Agency (RTSA) would control traffic during the show.
 She also revealed that the rehabilitation of the show grounds infrastructure in readiness for this year’s show was progressing well, saying the society has resurfaced five roads and have also constructed a new road from exhibitors gate behind Arcades to the new band stand area, and will be tarred.
 She said the society would spend a total of K1.3 billion on the rehabilitation and construction of new infrastructure this year.
 And Dr Nkumbula explained that the society expected a good participation from foreign exhibitors and that so far the society had received confirmation of attendance from 15 companies.
 Dr Nkumbula said the 15 companies were from countries like Egypt, India, Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe, China, Iran, Pakistan, Japan, Tanzania, Angola, Germany, Ghana, Nigeria and Malawi.
 She said the society also expected increased turnout of local exhibitors going by the number of applications received so far, adding that all the sectors of the economy are represented including non profit making organizations, government departments and aid agencies.
