USAID HELPS GOVT CONSTRUCT HEALTH CENTRE AT LUAMFUMU ZNS CAMP IN MANSA


Luapula Province Permanent Secretary, Jazzman Chikwakwa, has thanked the American government for constructing a modern health centre at Luamfumu Zambia National Service Camp in Mansa.
The American Ambassador to Zambia, Michael Koplovysky officially handed
over, the health centre to the community of Luamfumu.
USAID provided US$ 400,000 for the construction of the health centre.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Mr. Chikwakwa commended the American government for the health facility, which he said would help improve the health of the people living at Luamfumu ZNS Camp and the surrounding areas.
He further said, the health facility, equipped with state of the art equipment and well stocked with a variety of medicines, came at the right time when the province was grappling with the life threatening scourge of
HIV/AIDS.
The Permanent Secretary said Luapula had the highest infection rate, standing at 13 percent, compared to the other provinces which he said had rates below 11 percent.
He said the health facility was strategically positioned, thereby
reducing the distance to be covered the people seeking medical attention, including treatment for HIV/AIDS.
Mr. Chikwakwa said, in the past, the people of Luamfumu were accessing health services at Mansa General Hospital, 32 Kilometers away from the camp.
Speaking at the same function, United States embassy Charge d'affaires, Michael Koplovsky, described the new health centre as a symbol that
the American people had a commitment of investing in the health sector in Zambia.
Ambassador Koplovsky further said, USAID provided US$400,000 (about K2 billion) for use in constructing the facility expected to serve an estimated 13,000 people.
He described the health centre as an important investment and urged the people living around it to take all the necessarily measures not to get infected or infect others with HIV/AIDS prevent a number of diseases.
"In these times of HIV and AIDS, everyone around here must take all the necessary steps to ensure they do not get infected and not infect their partners," Mr Koplovsky said.
He said knowing one's HIV status and encouraging neighbours to do the same, was one important way of stopping the spread of HIV and AIDS.
The American Ambassador further called upon the people in the area to be conscious of their eating habits and take exercises as measures to keep their bodies in good health.
