CHILUBA AGREES TO MEET CAPT SOLO

By Globe reporter
Former second republican president Frederick Chiluba has agreed to meet Captain Steven Lungu, popularly known as Capt Solo, the mastermind of the 1997 failed coup against his government.
Chiluba’s special assistant Emmanuel Mwamba confirmed that the former president had accepted to meet Capt Solo following his request to seek forgiveness from the former president.
Mwamba said Capt Solo would use the meeting to apologise for his actions and tender his request for forgiveness.
Mwamba said Chiluba would meet Capt Solo at his residence in Lusaka’s Kabulonga residential area on Wednesday.
Capt Solo, who was released from prison last week, announced his intention to reconcile with Chiluba over his failed attempt to topple his government.
Home affairs minister Mkhondo Lungu last week announced the release of Capt Solo, whose death sentence was commuted to 20 years imprisonment by late president Levy Mwanawasa. Capt Solo, late Capt Chiti and several other soldiers staged a coup to topple former president Chiluba from power in 1997 but it was thwarted in less than three hours.
