FRA MAIZE TRANSPORTATION ON COURSE

The Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has assured that the transportation of maize to holding depots is progressing well countrywide contrary to reports that some transporters have halted the programme on grounds that the transportation rates offered by the Agency are too low.

FRA Public Relations Officer Mwamba Siame says the transportation of maize from satellite to holding depots has continued smoothly.

Ms. Siame however stressed that negotiations for desired transportation rates in selected areas are being done.

Ms. Siame said this today in response to a press query from ZANIS.

“Reports that some of our transporters are currently refusing to transport maize on grounds that the transportation rates the Agency is offering are low are not true. Transporters are on the ground moving the maize to safe storage,” she said.

This comes after reports in the media that some transporters in Gwembe district, Southern Province halted the transportation of maize to holding depots citing law transportation rates by the agency.

“As regards reports from Gwembe that maize is feared to be going to waste, I wish to inform the public that as FRA, out of the five locations where we have maize in Gwembe, only Ntanga satellite depot has maize stack outside but it is well covered,” Ms. Siame said.

Ms Siame said the Agency was also optimistic that the commencement of maize exports will create space in various parts of the country.
