SOCIAL CASH TRANSFER BENEFITS OVCS IN SOUTHERN PROVINCE

Southern Province Provincial Welfare officer Morris  Moono says that the 2010 Social Cash Transfer Scheme(SCT) implementation has been a success.

Mr. Moono said that  the scheme is  a good tool for government to fight poverty among members of different communities.

He said that because of this scheme, benefiting communities have improved in their nutrition status.

“ Even the  OVCs ( orphans and vulnerable children) in the area have  benefited from the scheme  as they are now able to access education, “ he said.

The Social Cash Transfer Scheme is  a grant meant to benefit older persons, unemployed, vulnerable children ,persons with disabilities, widows inclusive.

It also targets 10% of the poorest people and in Southern Province Monze, Kalomo and Kazungula and the scheme is yet to spread to other towns in the Province.

He said that because of this scheme vulnerable communities are able to acquire animals  such as goats and cattle  .

The lead funders of the scheme are DFID and UNICEF and other cooperating partners.

The Social Cash Transfer Scheme in Southern Province was  launched in 2003  in Kalomo  district .

“ In the scheme each  beneficiary vulnerable  household family is  entitled to K50,000 kwacha  and plans are under way by funders and other stake holders to increase  money for the households,” he said .

Mr. Moono  added that the realize of donor funds for the scheme has been very timely .

He said that every two years house holds which became self sufficient graduate and pave way for other people on the lists.
