Choma District Commissioner Laiven Apuleni has said he would not bow down to pressure for him to resign because of baseless allegations leveled against him.
He said this in a letter addressed to Choma central United Party for National Development (UPND) Member of Parliament George Chazangwe which was also copied to ZANIS in Choma (Southern Province) today.
ZANIS reports that this follows press reports quoting Mr. Chazangwe as challenging Mr. Apuleni to resign as District Commissioner, accusing him of undertaking open political campaigns in Mbabala Constituency.
But Mr. Apuleni said it is unfortunate that the MP could make allegations against him based on gossip peddled by ill informed individuals.
The District Commissioner said allegations that he had taken all feeder roads rehabilitation projects to Mbabala constituency in a bid to campaign for the MMD and himself, were unfounded.
He explained that the Government contract to rehabilitate feeder roads in Choma was signed in April 2008 when he was the District Commissioner for Sinazongwe.
Mr. Apuleni added that every year, the Provincial administration requested local authorities to submit lists of priority roads to be rehabilitated and the office of the District Commissioner did not have any influence.
He said as a Zambian, he had every right to participate in the democratic process of the country including contesting elections.
Mr. Apuleni said at the right time, he would make known his decision on whether to participate in the upcoming parliamentary polls.
