Swedish Ambassador to Zambia Marie Andersson de Frutos is tomorrow Friday December 10 expected to officiate at a public discussion forum at Arcades Cinema to discuss successes scored by the country in reducing maternal mortality which is Millennium Development Goal (MDG) five.
The public forum will also delve on the link to new born survival as outlined in MDG 4.
According to a press statement released to ZANIS by the Swedish Embassy in Lusaka today, the seminar is part of celebrations to mark 45 years of diplomatic relations between Sweden and Zambia during the Swedish week from December 6-12.
The public discussion will be held under the theme “Closing the Gap on Maternal and New Born Survival from a Human Rights Perspective”.
The Embassy has invited Professor Staffan Bergström from Sweden who is an obstetrician gynecologist with more than three decades of experience in Maternal Health as the key speaker.
Prof Bergström’s research perspective includes sexual and reproductive health care with particular emphasis on care of pregnancy complications and its impact on pregnancy outcome, both for the mother and the newborn child, in low-income countries.
Prof Bergström also coordinates a multi-country project within the AMDD programme (Columbia University) and Karolinska Institute entitled “Assessment of emergency obstetrical care provided by assistant medical officers trained for surgery in Mozambique, Tanzania, Malawi, Burkina Faso and Zambia”.
His scientific activities have been documented in a total of 448 publications including 28 books.
