Zambia has become the first English speaking country to be nominated at the Harubuntu Annual Award that is dominated by French speaking countries.
And some Africans from different countries have started arriving in the Belgium capital, Brussels for the ceremony that is expected to be attended by 160 people with 25 from Africa.
A Catholic Nun from City of Hope in Lusaka, Marie-Claire Mwenya is one of the nominees for the 2010 Harubantu Award. She entered her project called Changamuka a local language word meaning ‘wake up.’ The objective of her project is to restore the dignity of the needy women of Lusaka.
Journalist Owen Miyanza reports from Belgium that the Harubuntu Awards is being preceded by a conference for the nominees. The ceremony is organised by Echos Communications, a Belgium based charity organisation. Miguel de Clerk, the director says by having the conference together with the awards makes this year’s ceremony unique.
Harubuntu was initiated two years ago to award those in Africa who foster hope and create wealth and thereby demonstrate Africa’s potential. These are people in Civil Society, Social Entrepreneur and Local Government whose works have made a positive impact in community.
Harubuntu is a Kirundi word meaning ‘there is value in this place – here it is used in the context that there is value in Africa.
This year’s Harubuntu Award ceremony which is the third takes place on December 9 and it has attracted over 22 media International organisations.
